Pain, Stiffness, Swelling + Instability

What is causing your knee pain?

Knee pain can involve the joint, cartilage, meniscus, ligaments, tendons, or the muscles that control the hip and leg. It may build gradually, follow an injury, or keep returning during the same activities.

We look at where it hurts, how the knee moves, what loads it, and whether strength or control elsewhere in the leg is contributing. Then we explain what your findings mean and what to do next.
Learn more about Knee Pain

What your knee pain may be telling you.

01

Pain With Stairs

Pain around or behind the kneecap when climbing, descending, squatting, or sitting.

02

Swelling + Stiffness

A knee that feels puffy, tight, or difficult to bend and straighten.

03

Clicking + Catching

Clicking, catching, or locking that changes how confidently you move.

04

Giving Way

Weakness or instability that makes the knee feel unreliable during activity.

Common Knee Pain Patterns

Knee pain changes with stairs, squats, walking, and sitting.

Your symptoms and examination help us narrow down which structures and movement demands may be involved. These patterns are not diagnoses, and more than one can be present.

02

Tendon Pain

Pain above or below the kneecap may increase with jumping, running, lifting, or repeated loading.

03

Meniscus or Joint Irritation

Deep pain, swelling, catching, or discomfort with twisting may point toward the joint or meniscus.

04

Ligament Injury

Pain and instability after a twist, fall, collision, or sudden change of direction need careful assessment.

05

Arthritis-Related Pain

Stiffness, aching, swelling, and reduced motion may become more noticeable with age or activity.

06

Hip + Leg Weakness

The hip, thigh, and lower leg help control the knee during walking, stairs, and exercise.

07

Repeated Work or Training Load

Running, lifting, kneeling, sports, or a sudden increase in activity can exceed the knee’s current capacity.

Non-Surgical Knee Pain Care

Care for knee pain, stiffness, and weakness.

Your plan may combine physical rehabilitation, mobility and strength work, chiropractic care, hands-on treatment, or shockwave therapy when appropriate. If imaging or an orthopedic referral makes more sense, we will tell you clearly.
Personalized care planning for Knee Pain

Care begins with understanding the full picture.

01

Assessment

Test the knee before choosing treatment.

Your first visit helps us understand the painful area, check the knee’s movement and stability, and see how the entire leg handles load.

  • A conversation about the pain, injury history, and goals
  • A focused knee, hip, ankle, strength, and movement examination
  • Functional testing based on work, exercise, or sport demands
  • Imaging or referral when the findings call for it
  • Personalized recommendations and clear next steps
Pediatric chiropractic care at Everwell

Care that meets kids where they are.

Pediatric Chiropractic Care

Kids deserve care that feels calm, clear, and made for them.

Children are not simply smaller adults. They move, grow, play, and communicate differently—and their care should reflect that.

Some kids need a minute before they are ready. That is okay. We take time to listen to the parent, help the child feel at ease, and explain what we are doing before we do it.

  • A visit that moves at their pace
  • Clear answers for parents
  • Gentle, age-appropriate care when appropriate

Answers Before You Book

Questions about Knee Pain care.

These are common starting questions. Your recommendations will still depend on your evaluation, history, and goals.

Knee pain may involve the kneecap, tendons, meniscus, ligaments, joint surfaces, arthritis, or the muscles controlling the leg. An evaluation helps determine which possibilities fit your symptoms and whether further testing is needed.

Depending on the findings, care may include activity changes, mobility work, progressive strengthening, physical rehabilitation, hands-on treatment, or another appropriate therapy. Not every painful knee needs every service.

Shockwave therapy may be considered for certain persistent tendon or soft-tissue problems around the knee. It is not appropriate for every diagnosis, injury, or patient, so we evaluate the knee first.

Not everyone needs imaging. We may recommend an X-ray, MRI, or medical referral when the injury history, swelling, instability, locking, or examination suggests that more information is needed.

Seek prompt medical care after a major injury, if the knee looks deformed, you cannot bear weight, or it swells suddenly. A red, hot, swollen knee—especially with fever—or new significant weakness also needs urgent evaluation.
